The Advanced Professional Certificate in Early Years Curriculum & Learning Environment Design
(Indoor/Outdoor & Nature Play) equips educators to design rich, coherent early years curricula and
learning environments that promote exploration, wellbeing and deep learning. Informed by the UK
Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and contemporary early childhood pedagogy, the
programme integrates curriculum frameworks, play-based learning, indoor and outdoor
environment design, nature and loose-parts play, observation and assessment, inclusion, and family
partnerships—so young children experience carefully planned, joyful learning that builds secure
foundations.

- Partner with families and communities to extend learning between home, indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Reflect on practice and contribute to setting-wide quality enhancement aligned to the UKPSF.

Entry Requirements
- Experience in early years or early primary education recommended (or completion of a Teaching and Learning certificate).
- Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent suggested).
- Commitment to child-centred, play-based and inclusive practice.

- Principles of outdoor pedagogy; nature play and environmental awareness
- Managing risk–benefit, outdoor routines and all-weather provision
- Loose-parts theory and open-ended materials for creativity and problem-solving
- Sensory experiences, mini-projects and inquiry themes connected to children’s interests
- Observational techniques, learning stories and documentation of children’s learning
- Using formative assessment to plan next steps and adjust environments
- Adapting spaces and curriculum for SEND and diverse cultural/linguistic backgrounds
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL)-informed environment design; collaboration with specialists (awareness)
- Involving families in curriculum themes, nature/outdoor experiences and home learning
- Environment audits, quality indicators, action planning and contribution to setting-wide review/enhancement
