Advanced Professional Certificate in Acne, Pigmentation & Ageing Skin Management (Product Chemistry & Protocols)
A safety-led, practice-intensive programme for non-medical aesthetic practitioners focused on acne
care (cosmetic scope), dyschromia/pigmentation support, and visible signs of skin ageing.
Course Overview
A safety-led, practice-intensive programme for non-medical aesthetic practitioners focused on acne
care (cosmetic scope), dyschromia/pigmentation support, and visible signs of skin ageing. Learners
master structured assessment, protocol selection, and product chemistry (AHA/BHA/PHAs,
cosmetic retinoids, azelaic/niacinamide, vitamin C, peptides, sunscreen systems), alongside
treatment sequencing, cumulative-irritation control, post-care, and documentation. The emphasis
is on evidence-ready, insurer-aligned practice that delivers consistent results while staying firmly
within non-medical scope.
Why This Course is Important?
- Risk-aware results: Correct indications/contraindications, patch testing, and irritation management reduce complications and PIH.
- Protocol confidence: Ingredient fluency + stepwise plans → predictable outcomes and professional credibility.
- Commercial clarity: Clear treatment menus, home-care pathways, and review cadence support retention and reviews.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Conduct advanced consultation and skin assessment; decide to proceed, defer, or refer ethically.
- Differentiate common cosmetic-scope concerns (acneic tendencies/congestion, post- inflammatory marks, photo-ageing) vs. medical red flags.
- Select and sequence non-medical protocols (exfoliation, peels within cosmetic limits, device-assisted facials) based on skin type and tolerance.
- Apply product-chemistry principles: acid selection (AHA/BHA/PHAs), cosmetic retinoids, antioxidants (L-AA/derivatives), azelaic/niacinamide, pigment-pathway support (non- prescriptive).
- Design multi-visit plans with spacing, load management, and sensitive-skin adaptations; minimise PIH risk in higher Fitzpatrick types.
- Deliver post-care and home-care including rigorous photoprotection and staged re- introduction of actives.
- Recognise and manage expected reactions vs. adverse events; document and escalate when indicated.
- Maintain audit-ready records (consent, batch/lot, photography, after-care, incident/CAPA).
Target Audience
- Experienced beauty therapists/aestheticians moving into advanced skin programmes
- Salon/spa/clinic practitioners standardising evidence-ready acne/pigmentation/ageing services
- Supervisors/owners building safe protocols and documentation
Entry Requirements
- Age 18+; prior practical foundation in facial therapy/skin assessment (or equivalent experience).
- English proficiency (IELTS 5.0–5.5 or equivalent recommended).
- Commitment to non-medical scope and local licensing/insurance compliance.
Programme Structure & Modules
- History, medications (e.g., isotretinoin/retinoids, photosensitisers), allergies, pregnancy/breastfeeding
- Fitzpatrick typing & PIH risk; melasma awareness (often medical co-management)
- Informed consent; documentation discipline; scope & referral boundaries
- Barrier function, sensitivity/reactivity, inflammation and pigment pathways (awareness)
- Acne tendency: sebum/cornification/microbiome (cosmetic management only)
- Photo-ageing: collagen/elastic network changes; prevention focus
- Exfoliants: AHA (glycolic/lactic/mandelic), BHA (salicylic), PHAs – pH, strength, contact-time awareness
- Retinoids (cosmetic): retinol/retinal/ester derivatives; irritation control & ramping
- Pigment support: vitamin C (L-AA/derivatives), niacinamide, azelaic acid (cosmetic strengths); hydroquinone is medical in many jurisdictions—awareness only
- Barrier agents: humectants/emollients/occlusives; ceramides; sunscreen filters (UVA/UVB, broad-spectrum labelling awareness)
- Degrease/clarify; BHA-led exfoliation; enzyme options; congestion management (no medical extraction beyond hygienic comedone work)
- Irritation minimisation, purge counselling, and spacing of actives/treatments
- UV & heat discipline; antioxidants; gentle acid rotation; LED (awareness)
- High-Fitzpatrick PIH minimisation: slower ramp, barrier-first approach, strict SPF education
- Melasma caution: expectations; likely referral/medical co-management
- Dermaplaning/hydro-facial sequences (where trained), cosmetic retinoid onboarding, peptides & hydration stacks
- Cumulative-irritation management and seasonal adjustments
- Visit cadence; cool-down periods; actives timetable; do-not-combine rules
- Patch testing; sensitivity ladders; when to pause or regress
- SPF discipline, gentle cleansers, barrier repair, retinoid ramp strategies
- Heat/sweat, exfoliant, and makeup timelines; habit coaching for adherence
- Over-exfoliation, excessive erythema, peeling beyond expectation, burn suspicion, PIH onset
- First response, documentation, medical escalation triggers; corrective/preventive actions
- Consent, photography ethics/GDPR, batch/lot & device logs
- Menu design, transparent claims/advertising standards, complaint handling, insurer evidence
