Advanced Professional Certificate in Operational Risk, Internal Controls and Assurance (COSO and Three Lines Model)
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Operational Risk, Internal Controls and Assurance (COSO
and Three Lines Model) develops endtoend capability to identify, assess, design, and assure controls
across business processes and technology.
Course Overview
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Operational Risk, Internal Controls and Assurance (COSO
and Three Lines Model) develops endtoend capability to identify, assess, design, and assure controls
across business processes and technology. Grounded in COSO Internal Control – Integrated
Framework, COSO ERM, and the IIA Three Lines Model, the programme blends risk and control
selfassessment (RCSA), process mapping, control design and testing, issue remediation, and
reporting—so practitioners can provide reliable assurance to executives, audit committees,
regulators, and clients.
Why This Course is Important?
- Fewer surprises: Robust operational risk practices reduce incidents, losses, and regulatory findings.
- Assurance with credibility: Evidencebased testing and reporting improve board and regulator confidence.
- Efficiency and value: Streamlined controls and automation lower cost while improving risk coverage.
- Career progression: Positions professionals for senior roles in operational risk, internal audit, SOX/ICFR, and compliance.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Apply COSO principles to design and evaluate internal control systems aligned to objectives and risk appetite.
- Run an RCSA: identify risks, assess inherent/residual risk, evaluate control design/effectiveness, and agree actions.
- Map processes and controls (Swimlanes, SIPOC) and build a traceable controls library linked to risks and owners.
- Design and execute assurance testing (walkthroughs, design/operating effectiveness tests, sampling, reperformance).
- Use data analytics and continuous control monitoring (CCM) to enhance coverage and early detection.
- Manage issues: rootcause analysis, remediation plans, validation and closure; track KRIs and control health.
- Report to governance bodies with clear narratives, heat maps, dashboards, and assurance opinions per the Three Lines Model.
- Coordinate with internal audit, compliance, and external assurance (e.g., SOX/ICFR, service auditor reports) at an awareness level.
