Professional Certificate in Mental Health Awareness, Stress Management & Emotional Wellbeing

The Professional Certificate in Mental Health Awareness, Stress Management & Emotional
Wellbeing provides a clear, non-clinical foundation in understanding mental health.

Course Overview

The Professional Certificate in Mental Health Awareness, Stress Management & Emotional
Wellbeing provides a clear, non-clinical foundation in understanding mental health, recognising
common signs of distress, and supporting everyday emotional wellbeing in work, education and
community settings.
The programme introduces key concepts in mental health and mental ill-health (awareness level),
stress and burnout, emotional regulation, stigma, self-care and resilience. It focuses on what non-
specialist staff and leaders can realistically do: notice early warning signs, have sensitive
conversations, respond supportively, manage their own stress more effectively and signpost to
appropriate help—without stepping into diagnosis or therapy.

Programme Structure & Modules

  • Definitions: mental health, mental ill-health, mental-health conditions (awareness).
  • Continuum model: from thriving → surviving → struggling → in crisis.
  • Common myths and stigma; language that helps vs language that harms.
  • What is stress? Demands, pressure, coping and strain.
  • Recognising signs of chronic stress and potential burnout at work or study (awareness).
  • Everyday contributors: workload, role conflict, lack of control, isolation, change.
  • Behavioural, emotional, physical and performance-related signs that someone may be struggling.
  • Changes over time vs one-off reactions; importance of context.
  • Limits of non-clinical observation—avoiding diagnosis and labels.
  • Preparing for a conversation: timing, privacy, respect.
  • Using simple frameworks (e.g., Notice – Ask – Listen – Support – Signpost) in a non-clinical way.
  • Responding to disclosures with empathy, validation and appropriate boundaries.
  • Personal wellbeing “foundations”: sleep, movement, nutrition awareness, relationships and purpose (non-clinical).
  • Simple strategies: breathing and grounding, micro-breaks, boundary setting, realistic planning and self-compassion.
  • Encouraging a culture that normalises self-care rather than overwork.
  • How organisational culture, leadership, policies and workload influence mental wellbeing (awareness).
  • Reasonable, everyday adjustments and signposting routes within organisational frameworks.
  • Integrating mental-health awareness into safety, HR, education and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Role clarity: what you can offer (listening, support, signposting) and what you cannot (diagnosis, therapy, promises of secrecy in risk situations).
  • Recognising potential red flags: talk of self-harm, harm to others, abuse, severe or persistent symptoms (awareness level).
  • Following organisational procedures: safeguarding, HR processes, EAP, occupational health and healthcare referral.
  • Reducing stigma and promoting open, respectful dialogue about mental health.
  • Supporting colleagues and learners over time, not only in crisis.
  • Personal action planning: what each participant will do differently in their role or team.
