Advanced Professional Certificate in Aircraft Ground Servicing, Fueling & De-Icing Operations
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Aircraft Ground Servicing, Fueling & De-Icing Operations
equips aviation and ground handling professionals to plan, execute, and supervise.
Course Overview
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Aircraft Ground Servicing, Fueling & De-Icing Operations
equips aviation and ground handling professionals to plan, execute, and supervise the full range of
aircraft ground services safely, efficiently, and in accordance with international aviation practices.
The programme covers ground servicing sequences, stand preparation, potable water and lavatory
servicing, catering/cleaning coordination, aircraft fueling/defueling safety, and winter
operations/de-icing–anti-icing awareness in line with the intent of IATA AHM/IGOM, ICAO airside
safety principles, and common airline SOPs. It is designed for staff progressing from operational
ramp roles into lead/supervisory positions.
Why This Course is Important?
- High-risk operations: Fueling, working close to aircraft surfaces, and servicing in adverse weather are high-consequence activities — only trained staff should supervise them.
- Service quality & OTP: Correct sequencing of services protects turnaround time and prevents cross-contamination of tasks.
- Regulatory & airline compliance: Airlines, GHAs, and airports increasingly require documented competence for fueling and winter ops.
- Career progression: Servicing + fueling + de-icing competence is a core requirement for senior ramp, turnaround, and airside supervisory roles.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Describe and supervise the aircraft ground servicing sequence from on-blocks to off-blocks.
- Apply ramp/apron safety rules when positioning service vehicles and equipment at the aircraft stand.
- Plan and oversee aircraft fueling/defueling operations, including safety perimeters, communication with cockpit, and spill/emergency response.
- Coordinate cleaning, catering, potable water and lavatory service to avoid FOD, leaks, and turnaround delay.
- Explain the principles of winter operations and aircraft de-/anti-icing, fluid types and holdover awareness.
- Communicate effectively with operations control, turnaround coordinators, and flight crew, and complete the required documentation.
- Maintain an auditable trail (checklists, fueling logs, de-icing records) for airline or authority inspection.
Target Audience
- Ramp, apron, and turnaround supervisors
- Ground handling team leaders responsible for servicing and fueling
- Airline/airport operations officers and GHA station staff
- Safety/quality officers needing deeper insight into high-risk airside tasks
- Learners progressing from basic ground handling certificates to advanced airside roles
Entry Requirements
- Prior experience in ground/ramp/airport operations is recommended.
- English for aviation operations (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent suggested).
- Must be able to meet airport/employer medical and airside pass requirements.
- For fueling/de-icing parts, local authority/airport/operator approvals may still be required — this programme supports, but does not replace, such approvals.
Programme Structure & Modules
- Servicing philosophy and turnaround windows
- Stand preparation and safety zones
- Coordination with load control, passenger services, and flight crew
- Potable water, lavatory service, cleaning and catering vehicles
- Safe approach and departure from aircraft
- FOD control, housekeeping, and cross-task interference prevention
- Types of fueling (refueller truck vs hydrant)
- Safety perimeters, bonding/earthing, fire risk and no-smoking/enclosed spaces controls
- Communication with cockpit/crew, fueling with passengers on board (awareness)
- Fuel quality/quantity checks (operational awareness)
- Defueling and fuel spill response (initial actions and reporting)
- Contaminated aircraft surfaces – why it is critical to remove
- One-step vs two-step de-/anti-icing concepts
- Fluid types, mixture ratios, and holdover time (HOT) awareness
- Communication and final “clean aircraft” / anti-icing confirmation
- Documentation and weather-related safety measures
- Sequencing of high-risk tasks (fueling, catering, cleaning, water/lav)
- Avoiding conflicts – e.g. fueling vs catering vs passenger boarding
- Using turnaround checklists, A-CDM awareness, and delay codes
- Fuel spills, fire, and equipment collision response
- Lavatory/water contamination prevention and environmental rules
- PPE, confined/raised work areas, night and low-visibility operations
- Servicing and fueling logs, de-icing records, job cards
- Incident/near-miss and ground damage reporting
- Preparing for airline, GHA, or airport authority audits
