Courses
Advanced Professional Certificate in Laser & IPL for Hair Reduction & Skin Rejuvenation (Core of Knowledge Awareness)
A safety-first, practice-oriented programme for non-medical aesthetic practitioners who operate
laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices for hair reduction and skin rejuvenation.
Course Overview
A safety-first, practice-oriented programme for non-medical aesthetic practitioners who operate
laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices for hair reduction and skin rejuvenation. The course
delivers “Core of Knowledge” awareness—laser/IPL physics, hazards, controls, ocular safety,
patient/client selection, parameter setting within device IFUs, documentation, and incident
response—so treatments are delivered consistently, ethically, and in compliance with insurer and
regulatory expectations.
Why This Course is Important?
- Client & operator protection: Understanding optical risks, eye protection, plume control, and safe room design prevents avoidable harm.
- Predictable outcomes: Structured consultation, skin typing, test-patching, and parameter discipline reduce variability and PIH risk.
- Audit readiness: Evidence-grade records, logs, and SOPs support inspections, insurers, and internal quality reviews.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain laser/IPL fundamentals (wavelength, fluence, pulse duration, spot size, repetition rate) and tissue interaction (selective photothermolysis).
- Identify hazards (ocular, skin, fire, plume) and apply layered controls: PPE, engineering, administrative, and environmental.
- Conduct client screening (history, medications, Fitzpatrick typing), decide to proceed/defer/refer, and obtain informed consent.
- Perform test patches, interpret skin responses, and select device parameters within non- medical scope and IFU limits.
- Execute hygienic, disciplined procedures: room zoning, eyewear management, skin preparation, endpoint recognition, post-care.
- Prevent and manage adverse events (excess erythema, blistering, burns); document and escalate appropriately.
- Maintain audit-ready documentation: treatment records, batch/lot & maintenance logs, eyewear registers, room checks.
Target Audience
- Experienced beauty/aesthetic practitioners progressing to device-based treatments
- Clinic supervisors/owners standardising laser/IPL safety and protocols
- Non-medical personnel seeking insurer-recognised Core of Knowledge awareness
Entry Requirements
- Age 18+; prior hands-on skin care qualification (e.g., facial therapy/skin assessment) or equivalent experience.
- English proficiency (IELTS 5.0–5.5 recommended).
- Commitment to non-medical scope and compliance with local licensing/insurance rules.
Programme Structure & Modules
- Laser vs IPL; wavelength/absorption; fluence, pulse width, spot size, PRR
- Chromophores (melanin, haemoglobin, water) and selective photothermolysis
- Thermal relaxation time and endpoint principles
- Ocular/skin risks, reflections, fire risk, plume/aerosols
- Controlled area set-up: signage, access, windows, mirrors, surfaces
- Role of LSO/RSO awareness and clinic safety responsibilities
- OD ratings & wavelength-matched eyewear; patient vs operator eyewear
- Donning/doffing, storage, inspection & eyewear register
- PPE for plume and skin prep; ventilation basics
- Fitzpatrick typing and sun history; higher-type PIH considerations
- Medications (e.g., isotretinoin/photosensitisers) and medical history red flags
- Area-specific considerations; deferral and referral boundaries
- Patch-test design and documentation; interpreting responses
- Parameter selection within device IFUs: fluence, pulse stacking, cooling methods
- Hair reduction vs rejuvenation endpoints; session intervals and course planning
- Skin preparation (shaving, makeup removal, degrease) and cooling
- Hand hygiene, trolley set-up, single-use items; room turnover between clients
- Plume control (capture/filtration awareness) and waste handling
- Recognising over-treatment vs expected erythema/edema
- First response to hot spots, blistering, suspected burns; documentation and medical escalation when indicated
- CAPA logs and learning reviews
- Treatment records: parameters, areas treated, endpoints, photographs
- Device maintenance & calibration logs; eyewear and filter care
- Self-audit checklists, competency sign-off, insurer evidence
- Duty of care, privacy/data protection, advertising/claims ethics
- Awareness of international standards (e.g., IEC 60825-1, ANSI Z136.3) and local licensing/registration where applicable
- Manufacturer IFUs as the governing reference for scope and parameters
