Whitestone International Diploma in Interior Design
The programme integrates four core dimensions: Foundations of interior design and the built environment – space, function, and human experience. Design principles, aesthetics, and space planning – composition, colour, form, light, and zoning.
Course Overview
The Whitestone International Diploma in Interior Design is a 12-month vocational programme designed to provide a structured, practice-oriented foundation in the creative and technical aspects of interior design for residential, commercial, and hospitality environments.
The programme integrates four core dimensions:
- Foundations of interior design and the built environment – space, function, and human experience.
- Design principles, aesthetics, and space planning – composition, colour, form, light, and zoning.
- Materials, finishes, lighting, furniture, and technical coordination (awareness level) – how physical components and systems support the design intent.
Professional practice, project management, digital tools, and sustainable design thinking.
It is intended for individuals who wish to develop the creative, conceptual, and practical skills needed to contribute to interior design projects as part of a professional team.
Learners will explore how designers translate client needs and brand values into coherent spatial concepts, how they develop mood boards and design schemes, coordinate materials and furnishings, and communicate solutions through drawings and visual presentations, all while respecting budget, time, safety, accessibility, and sustainability constraints. The emphasis is on design literacy, visual communication, and project support, not on independent structural design, building-code sign-off, or licensure-level responsibilities.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to contribute effectively to concept development, space planning under guidance, selection of finishes and furnishings, preparation of presentations and documentation, and coordination with suppliers and consultants, under the supervision of qualified interior designers or architects.
This diploma is vocational and non-regulated. It does not qualify learners as licensed or registered interior designers, architects, engineers, or building professionals, and does not authorise them to provide structural design, fire-safety design, building-services engineering, or statutory code- compliance sign-off. Licensing, registration, and statutory responsibilities must only be undertaken by appropriately qualified and authorised professionals, in full compliance with national laws, professional-body requirements, and building regulations.
Why This Course is Important?
- Homes, workplaces, hospitality venues, healthcare facilities, and learning environments all depend on thoughtful, functional, and aesthetically coherent interior design.
- Successful projects require professionals who can understand client needs, create strong design concepts, and coordinate details and stakeholders from initial briefing to installation.
- Design studios and fit-out contractors rely on staff who can prepare drawings and presentations, coordinate materials, support site implementation, and communicate with clients and suppliers to a high professional standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain core concepts in interior design, space, and user experience at a vocational–intermediate level.
- Apply design principles, colour theory, and composition to develop coherent interior schemes under supervision.
- Support space planning, zoning, and furniture layout within functional, ergonomic, and regulatory awareness constraints.
- Assist with selection and coordination of materials, finishes, furnishings, and lighting that support the design intent and client brief.
- Prepare basic drawings, mood boards, visual presentations, and specification support documents using appropriate traditional and digital tools.
- Demonstrate awareness of health, safety, accessibility, sustainability, and building-services coordination in relation to interior design, escalating technical issues to relevant professionals.
- Contribute to project organisation, supplier coordination, and client communication in line with professional and ethical standards.
Target Audience
- Individuals in or aspiring to roles such as Junior Interior Designer (support level), Interior Design Assistant, FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment) Assistant, Design Studio Assistant, Visual Merchandising Support, or Interior Project Coordinator (support level).
- Staff in interior design studios, architectural practices, design-and-build firms, fit-out contractors, furniture and lighting showrooms, property developers, and hospitality or retail brands involved in design and refurbishment.
- Graduates and school leavers seeking a structured foundation in interior design before progressing to higher-level design qualifications or specialist training.
- Professionals in adjacent fields (e.g. architecture support, real-estate marketing, retail planning, facility management, or event/exhibition design) who want to strengthen their interior-design literacy and presentation skills.
Entry Requirements
- A recognised higher secondary qualification, diploma, or equivalent, preferably with prior exposure to art, design, architecture, engineering, or related creative/technical subjects
- Demonstrated interest in design, visual culture, and the built environment (e.g. portfolio of sketches, photography, or creative work is advantageous but not mandatory)
- Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent recommended) to engage with design briefs, theory content, and client-facing documentation
