Whitestone International Diploma in Cybersecurity
The diploma introduces key concepts such as information security fundamentals, common cyber threats, secure use of systems and networks, basic security controls, user awareness, incident reporting, and risk awareness.
Course Overview
The Whitestone International Diploma in Cybersecurity is a 12-month vocational programme designed to provide learners with a practical, structured foundation in cybersecurity principles, threats, controls, and responsible behaviours.
The diploma introduces key concepts such as information security fundamentals, common cyber threats, secure use of systems and networks, basic security controls, user awareness, incident reporting, and risk awareness. It is aimed at developing security-conscious professionals and support staff, not advanced penetration testers or security engineers.
Learners will explore how organisations can protect systems, data, and users through a combination of technical safeguards, policies, processes, and user practices. The emphasis is on understanding how attacks typically occur at a high level, how defences work conceptually, and what non- specialist staff can do to reduce risk, rather than on offensive techniques or exploit development.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to support cybersecurity awareness, basic security administration tasks under supervision, and incident response processes in business and organisational environments, acting as responsible, informed contributors to the organisation’s security posture.
This diploma does not train or authorise learners to conduct offensive hacking activity. It is focused on defensive awareness, safe practices, and support for organisational cybersecurity.
Why This Course is Important?
- Businesses, public bodies, and community organisations are increasingly exposed to phishing, malware, data breaches, fraud attempts, and system disruptions.
- Many incidents stem from weak passwords, unsafe browsing, mishandled data, or poor incident reporting rather than purely technical failures.
- Cybersecurity is not only the role of technical teams; all staff need awareness, skills, and appropriate habits to protect information and systems.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain core concepts of information security and cybersecurity, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability, at a foundational level.
- Recognise common cyber threats (e.g. phishing, social engineering, basic malware types, unauthorised access attempts) at an awareness level.
- Demonstrate secure behaviours in the use of passwords, devices, email, web browsing, and data handling.
- Understand the purpose of fundamental security controls such as access control, backups, basic network protection, and patching, at a conceptual level.
- Support the implementation of policies, procedures, and user awareness activities to reduce cybersecurity risk in organisations.
- Follow defined incident reporting and escalation processes, capturing relevant information without attempting unsupervised investigation.
- Act ethically and responsibly in all cybersecurity-related activities, respecting legal, policy, and professional boundaries.
Target Audience
- Individuals aspiring to entry-level roles such as Cybersecurity Support Assistant, IT Support Technician (with security focus), Security Awareness Coordinator, or Information Security Assistant.
- Staff working in general IT, administration, or operations who need to strengthen their cybersecurity knowledge and daily practices.
- Graduates and career changers seeking an accessible route into cybersecurity-related roles at a foundational level.
- Employees in any sector who are part of security, risk, or compliance initiatives and require structured cybersecurity awareness.
Entry Requirements
- A recognised higher secondary qualification, diploma, or equivalent
- Basic familiarity with computers, operating systems, and internet use
- Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent recommended) to understand technical concepts, policies, and guidance materials
Programme Structure & Modules
- Definitions and scope of information security and cybersecurity.
- The CIA triad: confidentiality, integrity, availability at a conceptual level.
- Data types: personal, sensitive, business-critical, and public information (awareness).
- Overview of digital environments: systems, networks, applications, and cloud services at a basic level.
- The shared responsibility model: management, IT, users, and third parties.
Overview of common threat types at an awareness, non-technical level, such as:
- Phishing and social engineering attempts.
- Basic malware concepts (viruses, ransomware, trojans) – high-level only.
- Password guessing and unauthorised access attempts.
- Simple web- and email-based threats.
- Recognising typical warning signs of suspicious messages, links, or requests.
- Human factors: why people click, share, or reuse passwords, and how habits impact security.
- Building personal vigilance and encouraging a culture of “think before you act” in digital environments.
Conceptual understanding of technical and procedural controls, including:
- Authentication and access control at a basic level.
- Updates and patching: why keeping software current helps reduce risk.
- Backups and data recovery awareness.
- Basic endpoint protection (e.g. antivirus/anti-malware tools – conceptual only).
- Secure use practices for passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and account management.
- Safe use of devices: laptops, mobile devices, removable media, and shared workstations.
- Working securely in different contexts: office, home, remote, and public locations.
- Role of policies, standards, and procedures in supporting cybersecurity.
- Typical organisational documents at an awareness level: acceptable use policy, password policy, incident reporting procedure, and data handling guidance.
- Good practice in storing, transmitting, and disposing of information, including basic awareness of encryption use at a conceptual level.
- High-level awareness that different jurisdictions have data protection and privacy requirements (e.g. obligations to protect personal data – no legal advice or detailed interpretation).
- Supporting compliance: following instructions, reporting issues, and helping with training efforts.
- What constitutes a potential cybersecurity incident at a basic awareness level.
- The importance of rapid reporting and not attempting to “cover up” mistakes or suspected issues.
- Simple incident response concepts: detection, reporting, initial containment support, and communication – under the guidance of specialists.
- The role of logs, basic documentation, and clear communication in supporting incident handling (non-technical).
- Connection between cybersecurity and business continuity: backups, alternative access, and recovery priorities at a conceptual level.
- Ethical principles in cybersecurity: respect for privacy, non-misuse of access, integrity, and compliance with laws and policies.
- Distinguishing between ethical defensive work and prohibited activities (e.g. unauthorised access, data theft, deliberate damage).
- Responsible use of security knowledge: not sharing or using information to facilitate attacks.
- Professional conduct: documentation, communication, teamwork, and respecting role boundaries.
- Mapping potential career pathways in cybersecurity: awareness of roles such as analyst, engineer, auditor, consultant (high-level), and the need for further specialised study and certifications.
