Advanced Professional Certificate in Sports, Exercise & Performance Nutrition Coaching
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Sports, Exercise & Performance Nutrition Coaching develops applied, non-clinical capability to support active clients—from health-focused exercisers to amateur and semi-professional athletes—with responsible nutrition and lifestyle guidance.
Course Overview
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Sports, Exercise & Performance Nutrition Coaching develops applied, non-clinical capability to support active clients—from health-focused exercisers to amateur and semi-professional athletes—with responsible nutrition and lifestyle guidance.
Grounded in evidence-aware sports and exercise nutrition principles (awareness level), the
programme integrates energy balance, macro- and micronutrient strategies, fuelling and recovery,
hydration, body-composition goals, and competition/event preparation—combined with coaching
skills, behaviour-change tools and ethical boundaries. Practitioners learn to design realistic, sport-
appropriate plans that enhance performance, recovery and long-term health while working safely
alongside qualified medical and sport-science professionals.
Why This Course is Important?
- High demand in fitness and sport: Clients increasingly expect coaches to advise on fuelling, recovery and body composition, not just training plans.
- Performance plus health: Sustainable performance requires balancing outcomes (speed, strength, endurance, physique) with wellbeing and longevity.
- Beyond “bro science”: The market is crowded with unregulated advice and extreme approaches; evidence-aware, ethical coaching is a clear differentiator.
- Professional trust: Clear non-clinical scope, red-flag awareness and referral pathways build confidence with clients, clubs and multidisciplinary teams.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain key principles of sports and exercise nutrition in accessible, non-technical language (energy systems, fuelling and recovery awareness).
- Assess typical dietary and training patterns and identify practical, non-clinical adjustments to support performance and recovery.
- Design sport-appropriate, lifestyle-compatible fuelling strategies for health-focused exercisers and amateur athletes (pre-, during and post-exercise).
- Support clients with non-clinical body-composition goals (e.g., fat loss, lean-mass support) using evidence-aware, psychologically safe approaches.
- Integrate hydration, sleep, stress management and basic load management awareness into performance-support plans.
- Adapt guidance for different sports, training loads and populations (e.g., strength vs endurance, team vs individual, youth adults vs older adults) within a non-clinical scope.
- Recognise red flags (e.g., Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport [RED-S] indicators, eating- disorder risk, suspected medical issues) and refer appropriately to doctors, registered dietitians, sport scientists or mental-health professionals.
Target Audience
- Fitness professionals, personal trainers and strength & conditioning coaches
- Health and wellness coaches working with active clients and amateur athletes
- Group exercise, CrossFit/functional fitness and martial-arts coaches
- Sports-club and academy coaches (youth, amateur and semi-professional)
- Corporate wellness professionals designing activity and performance initiatives
- Graduates of foundation nutrition or health-coaching programmes seeking a sport-focused specialism (non-clinical)
Entry Requirements
- Prior experience in fitness, coaching, sport, or health-related roles is strongly recommended (e.g., personal training or coaching certification, or foundational nutrition/health coaching course).
- Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent suggested).
- Basic digital literacy for blended/online participation and case-based assessment.
- Clear understanding that this is a non-clinical programme: it does not qualify participants to diagnose, treat, prescribe or manage medical conditions, nor to replace accredited sports dietitians or sport scientists.
Programme Structure & Modules
- Energy systems and the basics of fuelling different types of exercise
- Macro- and micronutrients in the context of training and adaptation
- Distinguishing general health advice from performance-oriented support

- Awareness of RED-S concepts and overtraining/under-recovery signals; boundaries and referral
- Timing and composition of pre-exercise meals/snacks for different sports
- Simple during-exercise fuelling for longer or higher-intensity sessions (awareness level)

- Awareness-level guidance on electrolyte needs for different conditions (heat, long duration)
- Practical strategies for training in hot, cold or humid environments (non-clinical)
- Role of sleep and recovery in performance, adaptation and injury risk
- Stress, life load and their impact on training response and fuelling decisions
- Designing simple routines for rest days, deloads and recovery-supportive habits
- Distinctions between endurance, strength/power, intermittent/team sports and mixed-modal training
- Youth, adult and older adult considerations; recreational vs competitive contexts
- Cultural, religious and practical constraints (e.g., fasting, budget, time, travel) and how to adapt plans
- Translating sports nutrition principles into client-centred coaching conversations
- Behaviour-change tools for adherence: environment design, habit loops, tracking and feedback
- Designing non-clinical group programmes and challenges (e.g., “8-week performance fuelling”, “pre-season reset”) that are safe and realistic
- Ethical marketing and representation of qualifications in sports nutrition
- Role clarity vs registered dietitians, sports physicians and sport scientists
- Red-flag indicators (e.g., suspected eating disorders, unexplained weight change, amenorrhoea, cardiac symptoms) and pathways for referral
