Courses

Whitestone International Diploma in Product Management

The programme introduces the full product lifecycle and product mindset: market and user understanding, product strategy and roadmapping, value proposition design, requirements and backlog management, cross-functional delivery, metrics and experimentation, stakeholder engagement, governance, and ethical considerations.

Course Overview

The Whitestone International Diploma in Product Management is a 12-month vocational programme designed to provide a structured, practice-oriented foundation in modern product management across digital, technology-enabled, and service-based environments.

The programme introduces the full product lifecycle and product mindset: market and user understanding, product strategy and roadmapping, value proposition design, requirements and backlog management, cross-functional delivery, metrics and experimentation, stakeholder engagement, governance, and ethical considerations. It is intended for individuals who support, or aspire to support, product management roles in technology companies, start-ups, corporate innovation units, and product-led organisations.

Learners will explore how product managers operate at the intersection of user needs, business viability, and technical feasibility, and how they coordinate engineering, design, marketing, operations, and commercial functions to deliver and continuously improve products. The emphasis is on practical product-management capabilities, structured thinking, and disciplined execution, rather than on software development, advanced UX design, or specialist data science.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to contribute effectively to product discovery, planning, delivery, and optimisation, working closely with senior product leaders, engineers, designers, and business stakeholders.

This diploma is vocational and non-regulated. It does not qualify learners as software engineers, UX designers, data scientists, lawyers, or financial advisers, and does not guarantee job titles or promotions. Strategic portfolio decisions, legal and compliance judgements, and specialist technical design must be carried out only by appropriately qualified professionals, in line with organisational policies and regulatory requirements.

Programme Structure & Modules

  • The role of the product manager and how it differs from project management, business analysis, and marketing.
  • Overview of the product lifecycle: discovery, definition, development, launch, growth, optimisation, and retirement.
  • Key concepts: problem–solution fit, product–market fit, value proposition, user experience, and business model awareness.
  • Product organisations and operating models:
  • Feature teams vs product teams; platform vs vertical product structures (conceptual level).
  • Core competencies of a product manager:
  • Customer-centricity, structured thinking, prioritisation, influence without authority, communication, and data literacy.
  • Ethics and responsibility in product decisions: privacy, fairness, accessibility, and long-term impact at awareness level.
  • Understanding context: market landscapes, competitors, and adjacent solutions at vocational level.
  • Customer and user research foundations:
  • Qualitative methods (interviews, observations, simple discovery surveys at awareness level).
  • Basic quantitative awareness: high-level interpretation of usage data and simple metrics (non-statistical).
  • Defining personas and segments at conceptual level, focusing on behaviours and needs rather than stereotypes.
  • Problem framing and opportunity identification:
  • Problem statements, jobs-to-be-done awareness, pain points, and desired outcomes.
  • Validating assumptions at early stages:
  • Simple experiments and tests (e.g. landing pages, prototypes at awareness level, manual concierge tests), under guidance.
  • Translating insights into clear, evidence-informed product opportunities.
  • Linking product work to organisation vision, strategy, and portfolio at conceptual level.
  • Product strategy foundations:
  • Clear objectives, positioning awareness, and differentiation.
  • Outcome-driven planning:
  • Defining OKRs or product outcomes at a practical level in alignment with leadership.
  • Roadmapping:
  • Time-horizon thinking (now/next/later), themes vs features, and communicating uncertainty.
  • Prioritisation techniques:
  • Using simple frameworks (e.g. value–effort awareness, impact vs confidence, Kano awareness, etc.) without rigid formula.
  • Managing scope and trade-offs:
  • Balancing desirability, feasibility, and viability, including technical constraints and operational realities.
  • Translating product strategy into epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria, in collaboration with engineering and design teams.
  • Fundamentals of agile and iterative delivery at awareness level (e.g. Scrum, Kanban concepts) without prescribing a single methodology.
  • Managing and refining the product backlog:
  • Ordering, slicing work into increments, handling dependencies at practical level.
  • Working with cross-functional teams:
  • Effective collaboration with engineering, design/UX, QA, operations, customer support, and marketing.
  • Handling delivery realities:
  • Dealing with constraints, technical debt awareness, unexpected issues, and scope changes.
  • Communication rituals:
  • Stand-ups (conceptually), planning and review cycles, retrospectives at vocational level, and synchronisation with other teams.
  • Defining product success metrics at a practical level:
  • Acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, revenue, and satisfaction (AARRR awareness) and related indicators.
  • Distinguishing output vs outcome metrics, and avoiding “vanity metrics”.
  • Basics of experimentation and learning:
  • Simple A/B test awareness, pilots, staged roll-outs, and qualitative feedback loops (non-statistical emphasis).
  • Commercial awareness:
  • Basic understanding of pricing models, unit economics awareness, and simple revenue/cost drivers (no financial modelling).
  • Lifecycle management:
  • Managing launches, iterations, feature sunsetting, and product retirement at practical level.
  • Data-informed decision-making:
  • Interpreting dashboards at awareness level, asking the right questions, and combining quantitative and qualitative evidence to inform decisions.
  • Identifying and mapping stakeholders:
  • Customers, internal users, executives, sales, marketing, operations, legal, risk and compliance.
  • Communicating effectively with different audiences:
  • Product briefs, one-page summaries, roadmaps, and status updates at professional level.
  • Product governance awareness:
  • Escalation paths, approval forums, and decision-making models (non-legal).
  • Working with legal, risk, and compliance:
  • Understanding boundaries in areas such as data protection, IP awareness, advertising, and sector-specific regulations, and when to seek specialist input.
  • Professional practice as a product manager:
  • Handling feedback, negotiating priorities, continuous learning, and building credibility through delivery and transparency.
  • Career development pathways:
  • Progression from Associate Product Manager towards more senior product roles, subject to performance, experience, and organisational opportunities.
