Courses
Whitestone International Diploma in Data Visualization & Business Intelligence
The diploma provides a structured foundation in dashboard design, KPI development, reporting, data storytelling, and the effective use of common Business Intelligence (BI) tools at a foundational–intermediate level. Learners will focus on how to design, build, and interpret reports and dashboards that help organisations monitor performance and make informed decisions.
Course Overview
The Whitestone International Diploma in Data Visualization & Business Intelligence is a 12-month vocational programme designed to develop practical skills in turning data into clear, actionable insights for decision-makers.
Emphasis is placed on good visual design, appropriate chart selection, basic understanding of data sources, and close alignment between business questions and BI outputs, rather than on advanced statistics or complex modelling. Learners will work with realistic data scenarios to design practical, user-friendly dashboards and reports for business users.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to contribute meaningfully to BI/reporting teams, performance units, and management functions, supporting a culture of data-informed decision-making.
This diploma is vocational and foundational; it does not by itself qualify graduates as senior BI architects or enterprise data platform designers.
Why This Course is Important?
- Organisations are collecting more data than ever, and they require well-designed dashboards and reports that highlight what matters.
- Business Intelligence and data visualization skills are required in finance, operations, marketing, HR, logistics, healthcare, government, and non-profit settings.
- Professionals who can translate data into intuitive visuals and concise narratives play a vital role in supporting strategy, performance management, and operational improvement.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of Business Intelligence and data visualization in organisational decision- making at a vocational level.
- Identify and define key performance indicators (KPIs) and basic metrics aligned to business objectives.
- Design and build clear, well-structured dashboards and reports using suitable charts, layouts, and filters in BI tools (at an introductory–intermediate level).
- Apply principles of visual best practice to make information easy to read, interpret, and act upon.
- Understand, at a conceptual level, how BI solutions connect to underlying data sources and basic data models (without advanced engineering detail).
- Communicate insights to non-technical stakeholders through data storytelling, combining visuals with concise written and verbal explanation.
- Recognise data quality, governance, and ethical considerations when designing and sharing BI outputs.
Target Audience
- Individuals aspiring to roles such as Business Intelligence Analyst (junior level), Reporting Officer, Dashboard Developer (entry level), or Performance & Insight Assistant.
- Staff in operations, finance, HR, marketing, sales, logistics, or service delivery who frequently work with reports, dashboards, and KPIs.
- Graduates and career changers interested in entering the BI and analytics field with a strong focus on visualization and reporting.
- Professionals who wish to improve their ability to present data clearly to managers and decision-makers.
Entry Requirements
- A recognised higher secondary qualification, diploma, or equivalent
- Basic numerical skills and comfort using spreadsheets or office software
- Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent recommended) to understand documentation, business requirements, and analytical commentary
Programme Structure & Modules
- Definition and purpose of Business Intelligence (BI) and its place within analytics and decision support.
- The difference between operational reports, management reports, and strategic dashboards.
- Understanding measures, dimensions, KPIs, and basic performance frameworks at a conceptual level.
- Typical BI environments: data sources, reports, dashboards, and users.
- The BI practitioner’s role in collaborating with business stakeholders, IT, and data teams.
- Common data sources for BI: transactional systems, spreadsheets, simple databases, and external data.
- Basic understanding of tables, fields, relationships, and simple data models at a high level (non-engineering).
- Data quality concepts: completeness, consistency, timeliness, and accuracy at a vocational level.
- Practical introduction to preparing data for reports (e.g. simple cleaning, grouping, and basic transformations – where handled within BI tools or spreadsheets).
- Importance of documenting data definitions and source understanding for reliable BI outputs.
- Core principles of effective data visualization: clarity, simplicity, focus, and avoidance of clutter.
- Choosing appropriate chart types (e.g. bar, line, column, pie with caution, stacked charts, simple scatter) for different purposes.
- Designing dashboard layouts: grouping related information, using hierarchy, and supporting quick interpretation.
- Avoiding misleading visuals: incorrect scales, overuse of effects, and confusing colour choices at a conceptual level.
- Considering the needs of different audiences: executive overviews vs. operational detail.
- Introduction to a mainstream BI tool environment (e.g. a typical self-service BI platform) at a practical, non-vendor-specific level.
- Creating simple data connections to source data (conceptual, guided).
- Building interactive dashboards with filters, slicers, drill-down/drill-through, and basic interactivity features.
- Publishing or sharing dashboards and reports within an organisational context (conceptual level).
- Managing versions, basic documentation, and simple update cycles for BI content.
- Moving from numbers to narrative: structuring a clear message from BI outputs.
- Combining charts and commentary to explain what is happening, why it may be happening, and what might need attention.
- Tailoring communication to different stakeholders: executives, managers, and operational teams.
- Running simple insight review sessions using dashboards as the central reference point.
- Gathering feedback from users to refine and improve reports and dashboards over time.
- Basic principles of data governance and stewardship in a BI context (roles, standards, naming conventions, documentation).
- Ethical use of data: fairness, avoiding misrepresentation, and respecting privacy and confidentiality.
- Basic awareness of access control and security for BI content (e.g. who can see which reports – conceptual, non-technical).
- Professional practice: working collaboratively, managing requests, prioritising work, and setting realistic expectations.
- Planning personal development in BI and analytics: future learning needs, specialisation options, and career pathways.
