Professional Certificate in Ramp Safety, GSE Operations & Apron Discipline
The Professional Certificate in Ramp Safety, GSE Operations & Apron Discipline is designed to
create safety-reliable ground staff who can work confidently in one of the highest-risk areas of
airport operations — the ramp/apron.
Course Overview
The Professional Certificate in Ramp Safety, GSE Operations & Apron Discipline is designed to
create safety-reliable ground staff who can work confidently in one of the highest-risk areas of
airport operations — the ramp/apron. The programme focuses on airside rules, aircraft stand safety,
FOD prevention, GSE selection and positioning, communication on the ramp, and strict adherence to
SOPs in line with recognised aviation guidance (IATA IGOM, AHM, and ICAO airside safety principles).
It is ideal for handlers, airlines, and airports that want to standardise ramp safety and reduce ground
damage, injuries, and delays.
Why This Course is Important?
- High-risk environment: Moving aircraft, GSE, jet blast/prop wash, reduced visibility — only trained staff can operate safely.
- Cost of ground damage: Minor apron incidents can cause major delays and expensive repairs.
- International alignment: Using IATA/ICAO language makes staff deployable across stations and airlines.
- Performance & OTP: A disciplined ramp supports safe, on-time departures.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Describe the airside/ramp environment and key hazards (jet blast, FOD, moving GSE, weather).
- Apply apron discipline standards around parked/taxiing aircraft, safety zones, and vehicle routes.
- Identify common Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and operate/position it safely at the stand.
- Follow correct aircraft stand arrival and departure procedures, including chocking, cones, and FOD checks.
- Communicate effectively with ramp supervisors, load control, and other ground teams to prevent incidents.
- Use checklists, reporting tools, and safety campaigns to support a proactive safety culture.
Target Audience
- Ramp/apron staff (new or upskilling)
- Baggage and loading teams working regularly at aircraft stands
- GSE drivers/operators and towing staff
- Ground handling supervisors and quality/safety focal points
- Aviation and airport operations learners aiming for airside roles
Entry Requirements
- Minimum secondary education or equivalent.
- Ability to understand and follow safety instructions in English (IELTS 5.0–5.5 or equivalent recommended).
- Medical/fitness and airport pass requirements as per local airport/employer.
- Prior completion of an airport/ground handling basics course is an advantage (not mandatory).
Programme Structure & Modules
